EMDR Therapy: A Path to Recovery

EMDR

Take the first step: EMDR is more than just a tool

Trauma can have a profound impact on daily life and mental health. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a scientifically validated form of therapy that helps people process traumatic experiences and find relief. At Montgó Lifestyle, we use EMDR as part of our holistic approach to help clients embrace a healthier, more balanced life.

In this article, we explain what EMDR is, how it works, and who it is suitable for.

1. What is EMDR?

EMDR is a psychotherapeutic method that helps people process traumatic memories. Developed by Francine Shapiro in the 1980s, EMDR focuses on activating the brain’s natural processing mechanisms to reduce the emotional impact of trauma.

2. How does EMDR work?

EMDR consists of eight phases, in which clients are guided step by step through the processing process:

Medical History and Treatment Plan

In this initial phase, the therapist gathers information about the client’s symptoms and traumatic experiences. Together, they develop a treatment plan.

Preparation

The client learns techniques for managing stress and emotions, such as breathing exercises and visualizations, to create a sense of security.

Review

Specific traumatic memories are identified, along with the associated negative thoughts, feelings, and physical reactions.

Desensitization (Bilateral Stimulation)

This is the core of EMDR. The therapist uses bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping, to help the brain reprocess the traumatic memories.

Implementation of Positive Cognitions

Negative beliefs are replaced with positive thoughts, such as “I am safe” or “I am strong.”

Body scan

The client is asked to observe and process any remaining physical tension or discomfort.

Conclusion

The session concludes with techniques to help the client relax and feel more grounded.

Evaluation

In the next session, the therapist will discuss progress with the client and determine whether further therapy is needed.

3. Who is EMDR suitable for?

EMDR is effective for a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Depression
  • Addiction Issues
  • Grief counseling

At Montgó Lifestyle, EMDR is tailored to the unique needs of each client, with the goal of providing long-term relief and recovery.

4. The Benefits of EMDR

Holistic Approach

EMDR is incorporated into a treatment plan that includes mindfulness, yoga, and nutritional therapy to promote full recovery.
